Emma Raducanu out of Wimbledon as Brit tennis star undergoes surgery

Emma Raducanu’s Grand Slam season could be over for 2023 after the Brit confirmed on social media that she’s having a ‘minor procedure’ on both her hands to fix the troublesome injury she’s been dealing with for nearly a year. It’s been a difficult 12 months for the 2021 US Open champion and she’s since dropped out of the WTA’s top 100 after her withdrawal from the Madrid Open last week.

Raducanu had spoken previously on the hand problems she faced in 2023, admitting “the current solutions aren’t very viable long term”. And the British tennis sensation has now taken the decision to undergo surgery, ruling her out of action for the next few months.

That means Raducanu will play no part in either the French Open or Wimbledon while her agent, Max Eisenbud, also hinted that it’s unlikely she’ll play the US Open either. Taking to social media, Raducanu confirmed the news with a photo of her in a hospital bed and her right hand in a cast.

She wrote: “It is safe to say the last 10 months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands. I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try heal it, unfortunately it’s not enough.

“I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues. I’m disappointed to share that I will be out for the next few months and while I am at it will have another minor procedure that is due on my ankle.

“It pains me that I will miss the summer events and I tried to downplay the issues so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you did not know the facts. Looking forward to seeing you all back out there.”

Raducanu has already undergone surgery on her racket-playing hand and Express Sport understands the procedure on her left ankle will be done in the next few weeks before finally going under the knife on her left hand.

Her team is understood to be confident about Raducanu’s prospect of returning in 2023.

Wimbledon’s official Instagram account replied: “Rest up, Emma, and come back stronger.”

Compatriot Jodie Burrage also offered her support to Raducanu, simply posting three love heart emojis.

It’s set to be the longest break Raducanu has taken from the WTA Tour since her breakout moment at Wimbledon back in 2021. The 20-year-old has withdrawn from several tournaments over the past year to try and recover from her recurring injury issues.

If the US Open is also out of reach for Raducanu to make a comeback, that means she might not return until September at the earliest when the WTA Tour is expected to return to China.
