Emma Raducanu breaks silence after latest injury nightmare
Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu has had a season plagued by injuries which has been cut short by her latest setback. The 19-year-old was hoping to compete in two more tournaments including the Cluj-Napoca, but has broken her silence to say that she’s missing this year’s event.
The world number 67 suffered a first round defeat in defence of her US Open crown last month. However, she looked to have turned a corner winning three matches on her way to the semi-final at the recent Korea Open, but was forced to retire in the third set of the last four match with a left glute injury.
Despite her injury the teenager returned straight back to action in this week’s Agel Open in Czech Republic losing to world number 11 Daria Kasatkina 5-7,4-6. However, a planned trip to Romania for the Transylvania Open next week has been scrapped.
A message on the tournament’s Twitter feed said: “Sadly, Emma Raducanu is forced to withdraw from Transylvania Open due to a wrist injury. Get well fast, Emma! We’re looking forward to see you soon.” Raducanu was then planning to compete in the Cluj-Napoca tournament in Romania, her father’s homeland.

In a brief Instagram post Raducanu said: “Sad to miss by Cluj friends this year,” followed by sad emoji. The Romanian tournament has a personal importance to the British star but she will have to wait until next year for another attempt at a desired victory.
This is the latest injury in an unfortunate year for Raducanu who also appeared to tweak her left side within the first few points of a match at the Nottingham Open in June and had multiple rounds of treatment on the court before retiring 3-4 down to Viktorija Golubic. She also retired at the Rome WTA 1000 a month earlier after being hampered by a back injury.
