Elton John ‘never thought’ he’d play Glastonbury in emotional goodbye

Sir Elton John upset fans as he emotionally admitted he “never thought” he’d play Glastonbury in what he described potentially as the “last show ever in England and Great Britain”.

The singer opened the set with his 1975 hit Pinball Wizard as fans went wild and joined in.

After the first song he spoke to the crowd: “Oh well, I never thought I’d ever play Glastonbury, but here I am.

“It’s a very special and emotional night because it may be my last show ever in England and Great Britain.

“So I better play well and I better entertain you because you’ve been standing there for so long.”

He added that he “appreciate[d] all the outfits” calling them “amazing”, before he played his next song The B*** Is Back from 1974.

The Rocket Man star wore a full head-to-toe gold suit with matching gold trainers, a black shirt and red lensed glasses.

The audience was captured rocking out to the star, enjoying the pyrotechnics as he performed several energetic performances.

Sir Elton’s version was released as a promotional single in the US as a cover of the original performed by The Who.

The song reached number seven in the UK charts.

The Middlesex-born star then proceeded to play several more 70s and 80s hits including Bennie and the Jets, Daniel, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues and Philadelphia Freedom.

The singer couldn’t hold back his smile as the audience chanted his name several times between songs.

He gave a quick speech ahead of his first guest Gabriels who stunned in a bright fuchsia head-to-toe outfit.

They sang the 1979 hit Are You Ready for Love as a gospel choir accompanied them.

Gabriels appeared to be having the time of his life as he danced around the stage as fans cheered him on.

The next guest that Elton introduced was singer-songwriter Stephen Sanchez who performed his own song with Elton accompanying him.

The musician performed Until I Found You which went viral this year and was even performed at Sofia Richie’s wedding.

Sir Elton then continued with fan favourites Your Song and Candle In The Wind which featured a video montage of Marilyn Monroe.

The next guest to play was Brandon Flowers from The Killers who Elton stated he had thought of “immediately” to perform with him.

The band frontman is a Glastonbury regular having performed six times before.

His final guest of the night was Japan-born Rina Sawayama whom Elton left the piano to perform and dance with to his 1976 Don’t Go Breaking My Heart hit.
