Elton John and Manchester City team celebrates with impromptu song

Saturday night’s alright for winning! Manchester City end their FA Cup triumph on a high note – thanks to a homecoming greeting by Sir Elton John.

And Pep Guardiola’s jubilant team even burst into an impromptu version of the legend’s 1971 classic Your Song, as they met on the tarmac at Manchester Airport.

The Rocketman singer had just performed his final show of a three-night stint at the AO Arena in Manchester.

Wearing a football manager-style tracksuit and trademark tinted glasses, Sir Elton, 76, shook hands and hugged stars including Belgium’s Kevin de Bruyne and England’s Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips.

Other athletes, including midfielder Phil Foden, 23, took their own selfies with Sir Elton – just hours after the team’s 2-1 victory over local rivals Manchester United at Wembley Stadium, London.

Despite being a die-hard fan and former director of Watford, Sir Elton also gave the team his full support ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final against Inter Milan. Premier League winners City head into the showdown in Istanbul with a golden opportunity to emulate Man United’s treble in 1999.

Pumping his fist excitedly, an enthusiastic Sir Elton told the players: “One more next week! Come on! Come on!” The football-mad singer, 76, even managed to get his hands on the FA Cup as he posed with Guardiola, City’s players and staff.

Guardiola – who still had his winner’s medal round his neck – is a huge fan of Sir Elton and took a break from his team’s FA Cup preparations last week to attend one of his sell-out shows with his eldest
daughter Maria.

In a 2018 interview, pop fan Pep, 52, picked Your Song, which was the superstar’s first global top 10 hit, as one of the songs which has helped define key moments in his life and career.

He added: “One of my dreams is to have a concert from Elton John, especially this song. I first heard it when I was 18 or 19 and started to play in Barcelona, I remember a lot of songs from that period.”
