Musk, who took over the microblogging company in October 2022, called the mass firings a “desperate measure” and said the company now needs to hire people again.
“We need to hire again and hopefully, if people are not too mad at us, rehire some of the people who were let go,” he told CNBC in an interview.
“Desperate times call for desperate measures. There’s no question that some people who were let go probably shouldn’t have been let go. We simply didn’t have time to figure out… we had to make widespread cuts. This is not to say that everyone let go from Twitter is terrible or something,” Musk added.
Musk faced a storm of criticism when he took over the reins of Twitter for mass layoffs, reinstating banned accounts, suspending journalists and charging for previously free services.

On November 4, Musk laid off nearly 50% of the company’s workforce and later directed employees to commit to “extremely hardcore” work in order to realise his vision of a new Twitter.
He also hailed the new Twitter chief Linda Yaccarino. “Twitter is very much an advertising business. Linda is obviously incredible at that and she’s just a great executive in general. Linda will operate a company and I will build products,” he said.
