Eels brave Titans with 11 players after double sin bin

The Eels claimed a one-point victory over the Titans at Commbank Stadium on Sunday night after a late field goal from Mitchell Moses captured the 25-24 win.

The hosts controlled the opening quarter of play before a double sin bin gifted the Gold Coast a way in.

The match quickly became 11 against 13 as Maika Sivo and Reagan Campbell-Gillard were sent to the sin bin by referee Chris Butler.

The Eels first lost winger Maika Sivo in the 21st minute after he was penalised and placed on report for a high tackle on Jojo Fifita.

The incident was not noted straight away but was subsequently picked up by the Bunker where replays demonstrated the extent of foul play.

“It was high, forceful contact. You are in the bin,” Butler could be heard telling Sivo.

Three minutes later, prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard joined his teammate in the bin after leading with his knees in a tackle.

In an apparent flash of ill-discipline, Campbell-Gillard looked to act with intent.

“That is bordering on a send-off,” former NRL premiership player Bryan Fletcher told Fox League.

“He’ll get a couple of weeks for that.”

With the Eels down two players, the Titans, who were trailing 12-4 before the penalties, made the most of the situation, scoring 10 points to steal the lead.

This triggered a see-sawing affair where the lead changed on five occasions.

In the 66th minute, Parramatta skipper Clinton Gutherson put down an extraordinary superman-like try on the left edge before Moses slotted a crucial conversion from the sideline to even the score at 24-all.

This set up Moses’ clutch one-point field goal in the 74th minute to edge the Eels in front.

Titans halfback Tanah Boyd attempted to kick an equaliser but was unable to hit the target.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Eels coach Brad Arthur was pleased with his side’s resilience.

“It was a crazy game of footy, wasn’t it,” he said.

“Every time we play Gold Coast, it seems to go that way.

“I’m extremely proud of them, we used a lot of juice … just to find a way to get the result was really important for us.”
