As the seasons change, so do our tastes in fragrances.
It’s time to put down winter’s woodsy scents, and instead opt for something lighter – and yummier.
All of a sudden, ‘edible’ fragrances with foodie notes – from nuts to fruit to honey to cream – have got us hooked.
TikTok-famous fragrance brand Phlur can’t keep their Tangerine Boy in stock in the UK, and Kayali’s Yum Pistachio Gelato 33 has all the influencers talking (with good reason).
And no, you can’t actually eat these perfumes – but they smell like you could.
Jacques Huclier, a senior perfumer at fragrance manufacturer Givaudan, says there’s a reason behind this sudden trend.
‘Familiar, sugary (often dessert-inspired) smells typically bring a sense of nostalgia and reassurance – imagine the smell of sweet treats baking when you were a child – that many have been craving,’ he says.
‘With the origins dating back to Thierry Mugler’s iconic Angel in 1992, there’s been a big evolution in edible, gourmand fragrances.
‘What we’re seeing now is a resurgence of these playful, “foodie” fragrances, done in a modern way.
‘There’s been an emphasis recently on nutty pistachio, vanilla and cherry notes, with textural modernity layered in for an untraditional take – think smokey elements or a tart effect.’
At Givaudan, they’ve been able to capture this edible theme through Project Delight, a collaboration between perfumery and flavorists.
‘We’ve reimagined delicious, tasty flavors into new fragrance palettes for something completely unique within fragrance creation,’ he adds.
If you want to smell so delicious that you’re almost delectable to those around you, it’s time to shop an ‘edible’ fragrance.
