Easy-to-grow greens for a healthier home
The sight of lush greenery often carries a certain allure. Perhaps, it’s man’s natural attachment to nature that draws many to gardens, open spaces and colorful blooms.
Besides the aesthetics, greens have been proven to provide health benefits. Studies have shown that the sight and presence of greens can help alleviate stress and anxiety, and improve moods, which in turn, may boost productivity and creativity.
This is why, especially in recent years, many have sought to bring greens inside their homes. Condo dwellers in the cities, for example, have begun bringing plants inside their units, carving small spaces to serve as their pocket garden.
Plants, after all, allow them to be closer to nature. This not only leads to positive mental well-being, but also helps improve the quality of indoor air which can help regulate humidity.
As a bonus, plants allow us to amp up our personal spaces as they definitely enhance any spot. This only goes to show that plants serve both a practical and aesthetic purpose which can enhance everyday life. With this, we listed five types of low maintenance plants that can thrive and survive inside your home despite your busy schedule.
Snake plant
The snake plant is one of the most beginner-friendly plants as it can withstand any light condition. Plus, you only need to water this plant once a week or when its topsoil begins to dry out. Place this by a door or window and allow the plant to thrive on its own as it only needs minimal care.
Money tree
In feng shui, this tiny plant is said to bring good luck, wealth and prosperity—hence, its name. It prefers bright, indirect light, but can also tolerate artificial lighting. Water this plant when its topsoil dries out but make sure that it drains thoroughly to prevent root rot.
Golden pothos
This plant thrives both in water or in soil under different lighting conditions, especially in indirect sunlight as it prevents its leaves from burning. You may place them in trailing baskets or in pots as well. They look great on shelves or hanging in a corner as this allows its vines to trail out as they grow.
Selloum
Looking for a bigger plant to fill out a bigger space? The selloum plant only needs to be watered once a week, or twice during the summer. Keep it under moderate, natural light when placed indoors. Just be careful of its sap as it can cause irritation.
ZZZ Plant
Also known as the Welcome Plant, the ZZZ can grow up to three feet tall. It can withstand low light and does not require frequent watering (you only need to water it when the soil looks dry). This is perfect for busy bees since it barely needs any special attention. Just remember to re-pot this plant as it grows over the first three years.
