DWP urges pensioners to check their accounts this month and next

Eligible people are to be paid between £250 and £600. This year the amount includes a Pensioner Cost of Living Payment between £150 and £300.

Information about the payment on the Government website outlines that the money should be arriving in people’s bank accounts very soon.

It says: “Most payments are made automatically in November or December. You should be paid by 13 January 2023.

“Check your account in November and December to make sure you have been paid.”

A person will receive the payment if they get the state pension or certain social security benefits.

To qualify, a person must have been born on or before September 25, 1965, and have lived in the UK for at least one day during the week of September 19 to 25, 2022, known as the qualifying week.

People who did not live in the UK during the qualifying week can still get the money if they have lived in Switzerland or a European Economic Area country, and have a sufficient link to the UK.

A sufficient link may be having lived or worked in the UK and having a family in the UK.

People who live in countries that are on average warmer than the UK cannot get the payment, such as France, Portugal or Spain.

People who do not receive the state pension or a relevant benefit, or who live abroad, may need to make a claim for the funds.

People who have received the Winter Fuel Payment before do not need to claim again unless they have deferred their state pension or moved abroad.

A person will not qualify if they are in hospital receiving free treatment for more than a year, or if they need permission to enter the UK and their granted leave says they cannot claim public funds.

People who were in prison for the whole week from September 19 to 25, 2022, can also not claim the support.

Those who lived in a care home for the whole time, from June 27 to September 25, 2022, and received Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income–related Employment and Support Allowance, also do not qualify.

Individuals can put in a claim for the payment over the phone, by calling the Winter Fuel Payment Centre. Or by post.

Applicants will need to provide details of their National Insurance number and their bank or building society details.

They may also need to give information about when they got married or entered into a civil partnership and details about the time they spent in a care home from June 27 to September 25, 2022.
