With the early May bank holiday and The Coronation of King Charles III fast approaching, many people are looking forward to some time off, and hopefully, some long sunny days.
Three – yes, three – Mondays in May are bank holidays – May 1, May 8 and May 29 – when many of us will spend time with friends and family.
Who knows, if the sun comes out, even a barbecue or two might be in the air.
But as the cost of living crisis continues to have an impact on our lives, many people may be worrying about the cost of it all, and whether they can afford to have a party or go out with friends.
The good news is that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) takes bank holidays into account when deciding payment dates.
So when can you expect to be paid over the upcoming bank holidays?
Here’s what you need to know.
Bank holiday Monday, May 1
Those on Universal Credit, Disability Living Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance and Personal Independence Payments (PIP) are all under the DWP umbrella.
The full list of affected payments are as follows:
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
- Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Pension Credit
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- State Pension
- Universal Credit
All these benefits will be paid early – so if your payment is due on Monday, May 1 you can expect it to arrive by Friday, April 28.
Other benefits (under the HMRC umbrella) which should also be paid by this date are:
- Working Tax Credits
- Child Tax Credits
- Child Benefit
- Guardian’s Allowance
Bank holiday for the coronation, May 8
The coronation itself is on Saturday, May 6, but many people are expected to make a weekend of it as Monday, May 8 is a bank holiday.
So if your payment for any of the benefits listed above is due on Monday, May 8 you can expect it to arrive by Friday, May 5.
Bank holiday Monday, May 29
The late Spring bank holiday falls on Monday, May 29, when many of us will hopefully kick-start our summers as we approach the longest day.
So if your payments for any of the benefits listed above is due on May 29, it should arrive by Friday, May 26.
Future payment changes in 2023
If you’re keen to get more dates in the diary, payments due on the summer bank holiday (August 28) will be made by August 25.
And if it’s not too soon to talk about Christmas 2023, payments due on December 25, 26 and 27 will be paid by December 22.
