Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor’s incurable cancer diagnosis – musician’s first signs
When Duran Duran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, the moment was significant for more than one reason.
While Andy Taylor wasn’t able to attend the ceremony, he sent a letter with his bandmates that revealed he’s been battling prostate cancer for years.
As the band accepted its honorary status, frontman Simon Le Bon read it out: “Just over four years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer.
“Many families have experienced the slow burn of this disease and of course, we are no different.”
Earlier this year, Taylor opened up about his diagnosis in an interview with Channel 5, sharing his first symptoms.
The guitarist shared he first noticed warning signs four-and-a-half years ago when he was out jogging.
Taylor said: “I started to notice what you would think was a kind of arthritic sort of pain, and I never thought more of it than that.
“I started having these symptoms … and then I noticed on my neck I had what felt like tumours.
“[The consultant] said it was stage four, metastatic – which is a death sentence.”
Prostate cancer often doesn’t show signs until the prostate is large enough to affect the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the penis.
According to the NHS, you might notice the following symptoms once this occurs:
- Increased need to pee
- Straining while you pee
- Feeling that your bladder has not fully emptied.
However, the symptoms don’t always end here as the cancer can spread further.
Once the cancerous tumour travels, you might experience problems like bone and back pain, loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss.
While these symptoms don’t necessarily guarantee you have the deadly condition, it’s important to get checked.
Taylor has added that while his cancer has “no cure”, “there’s some new treatments that can help”.
The guitarist remains positive and committed to the idea that “I’m gonna live life”.
