Dulwich Firework Display ~Lillian Mose Newstead Wood School

Each year on the fifth of November since 1605, the skies across England, Wales and Scotland are brightly illustrated with mesmerising fireworks marking the festivity of Guy Fawkes night. This night reveals a sense of warmth and thrill that is usually missing from the chilly month of November, and I was lucky enough to spend it in Dulwich.

Dulwich’s firework display is a charming family-oriented fest, bustling with enthusiasm and anticipation. This year, it started at five o’clock in the early evening, allowing everybody the time to feast on the wide selection of food provided, ranging from barbecued meat to margherita pizzas, all before the actual firework display at seven o’clock. We all walked around the sports ground; our hands clutching warm paper cups trying our hardest to warm up. However, it was not long before the damp chilly autumnal atmosphere was replaced by the inviting scents of warm food and beverages.

When I first arrived, I was uncertain of what to expect due to it being my first firework display ever! But as I navigated through the crowds buzzing with excitement, I realised how contagious excitement is. Lulled by the scent of mulled wine, united by the sense of eagerness and comforted by the presence of one another, my family and I animatedly waited for the display to begin.

When the firework display had finally started it was met with a chorus of “oohs” and “aahs” that did not die out throughout the whole display. It was a jaw-dropping display, even now I can distinctly remember how the fireworks shot up and exploded in the sky, dazzling and extravagant. The intense colours and lights conquered the dark, illuminating the night working alongside the stars.

It was a while before the fireworks stopped and the smell of gunpowder dispersed through the field. To my surprise the pleasant atmosphere had not faded, even whilst I was leaving. It might have been my first firework display, but it certainly will not be my last.
