Driving warning as major law change to come in TODAY to combat speeding
BRITS are being warned about a major new law coming into effect today that could see your car installed with a speed limiter, making it automatically slow down if you are caught speeding.
From July 6, all new motors will be legally required to be fitted with the technology to keep drivers within the speed limit.
The devices will identify the speed limit through GPS data – and then automatically slow down your car for you if they detect it is speeding.
The road rule will see all cars manufactured in the European Union installed with the limiters.
The law is part of a slate of new driving rules coming into place this month.
Jonathan White of the National Accident Helpline said: “The new speed limiters, which are expected to be introduced on cars that are sold from July 6 2022, will hopefully see new drivers sticking to the recommended speed limits.
“The technology is designed to warn drivers when they are approaching the speed limit.
“If the driver doesn’t slow down, the speed limiter reduces the engine’s power and the vehicle’s speed.”
The law will not apply to cars already in circulation, and will only see motors sold from today onwards fitted with the technology.
