Drivers warned by DVLA to pay car tax by APRIL or face soaring costs

MOTORISTS have been urged to pay their car tax as soon as possible – before a new system comes in.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has warned car owners to pay up by April at the latest.

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is due to change in the upcoming spring budget on March 23.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will introduce the changes in line with the rise of inflation.

According to a policy paper from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) the hikes are a “standard uprating” in line with Retail Price Index.

The new 2022 car tax, which was first mentioned at the Autumn Budget 2021, will vary in price and it all comes down to the amount of CO2 emissions your vehicle is producing.

The tax hikes come as the government ramps up its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in the UK.

With a push for electric cars to become the most common vehicles across the country, it comes as no surprise that the tax will not apply to these vehicles as they don’t produce any CO2.

All diesel, petrol and other fuel-powered vehicles will fall under the new VED rules and will be looking at extra costs.

Car experts Heycar told The Mirror: “The Chancellor will announce new road tax rates as part of the Spring budget.

“Some of these will be major and affect the cars that are built that year, others will be a more minor adjustment designed to bring an older tax system in line with inflation.”

Drivers are being warned to pay up now to avoid price hikes.

Gov.uk states: “If you change the tax class on 25 March, you’ll have to pay the increased rate from 1 March.”
