DRIVERS HAVE been offered a surprisingly cheap hack to demist a car’s windscreen that involves clothes and cats.

As autumn turns to winter, many drivers will be battling wth misted screens due to differing temperatures inside and outside their cars.

Car expert, Leasing Options consulted cleaning professionals the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Facebook group to discover the best hacks to prevent condensation.

Fresh cat litter in a pair of tights is among the best because the litter is designed to absorb, so is great at getting rid of moisture in the air.

The cleaning experts said: “Put fresh cat litter in a pair of tights, tie them off at the top and place them on the dashboard close to the windscreen.

“It works a treat.”

Windows fog up when there is moisture trapped in the car and the window is colder than the dew point.

Driving with foggy windows is dangerous and drivers can be fined for doing so.

Car experts also warned that driving with fog on the windows decreases visibility, which increases the chances of having an accident.

The Highway Code states that windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision.

Drivers can be fined £2,500 and three penalty points if they drive with the windows misted up.

Several factors contribute to increasing the moisture levels in a car such as breath wet shows and leaks.

Other hacks suggested to decrease moisture include smearing washing-up liquid on your windows and leaving it to dry or dropping a few silica gel packets into a box and keeping them in your car.

One person on the Facebook group also recommended cleaning windows with shaving foam or leaving in the car a Tupperware box of coarse rock salt.
