Driver warning – why not being polite behind the wheel could mean a big fine

Drivers have been left stunned after a warning that not being polite while behind the wheel could result in huge fines.

If used inappropriately, flashing headlights and hazard lights can both result in a fine of up to £1,000, it’s been revealed.

In the UK, motorists often use a flash of the headlights to let another car out of a side road or at a junction, while you’ll also see grateful drivers give a quick tap of the hazard lights to say thanks once they’re on their way.

But, being aggressive in your driving and using flashing lights to intimidate other motorists, could mean you’ll be pulled over by police and end up facing a big fine.

Rule 110 of the Highway Code states that headlights should only be flashed to let other road users know that you are there, and rule 116 states that hazard warning lights should only be used on motorways or unrestricted dual carriageways to warn drivers of a hazard or obstruction ahead.

And, while most of the wet weather is hopefully behind us, the odd deluge could leave inattentive drivers with an even bigger fine.

According to the Road Traffic Act, if a motorist splashes a pedestrian while driving through a puddle, they may face a penalty of up to £5,000 for driving without reasonable consideration for others.

So, the lesson is clear – mind your manners out on the road and stay alert, or you could be left seriously out of pocket.
