Driver loses licence for driving at 10mph in 60mph zone on busy road

A DRIVER in his 80s had his licence confiscated for going at 10mph in a 60mph zone on a busy road.

Concerned onlookers called the police after spotting the old man going at a snail’s pace in his Ford on the A346 between Marlborough and Swindon.

Officers ordered him to stop driving – and insisted he move to the passenger seat so a cop could drive him and his car home.

An eye test the next day showed the man’s sight was so bad he couldn’t read a number plate from 20 metres away – and his licence was confiscated, the Mirror reports.

Police constable Sean Williams said: “It is a concern that this man was behind the wheel of a car and we are thankful for those who called us to alert us and that this didn’t end in something far more serious.

“We stress that you must not get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you are not fit to do so, and this includes meeting the DVLA’s standards of vision for driving.

“We advise anyone with concerns to take regular eye tests to ensure they are able to read a number plate from 20 metres and also urge family members to ensure relatives are fit to drive.”

It comes after an 86-year-old woman died when her white Nissan Pixo crashed near Inverness in November.

Her passenger, an 88-year-old man, also died after the incident.

The crash happened at the Munlochy junction for the B9161 and A9 on November 19.

Sergeant Neil MacDonald, of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit, said at the time: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.

“The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this time.”
