Drew Barrymore explains how she suddenly became best pals with Britney Spears

The Baby One More Time icon, who has come under fire today after appearing to body shame Christina Aguilera’s dancers, married her long-term partner Sam Asghari on June 9 with Drew among the celebrity guests which also included Madonna, Paris Hilton and Selena Gomez.

Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the Wedding Singer star revealed how their friendship began during the tail-end of Britney’s 13-year conservatorship which finally came to an end in 2021.

‘I made friends with Britney about a year and a half ago and we had some secret exchanges,’ she said.

‘I know that sounds nefarious, but it was exactly the opposite! It was very connective and honest and we’d both been through some things.

‘We have some parallels that are unique in their circumstances, but also I think the things we go through in life, although these circumstances may seem so next-level the feelings of growing up, struggling, all the stuff we’ve both been through is something I felt connected to her.

‘I’m not a real reach out sort of person – I’m not Hollywood Bob, I’m not slick I was just – the humanity in what she was going through trying to get her freedom back was something I felt compelled to reach out and we found a deep connection there.’

The movie star-turned chat show host also spilled the details on the wedding including what was on the menu for the sit-down dinner – absolutely nothing!

‘They did the ceremony, she got right to the dance party, we had the best time,’ Drew said.

‘And I was like, “Thank you!”’

None of Britney’s family were invited to the wedding, and her two sons, Sean Preston, 16, and Jayden James, 15, have said they refused to attend.
