TUESDAY

I Just Killed My Dad

Anthony Templet shot his father and never denied it. But why he did is a complex question with profound implications that go far beyond one family.

This disturbing documentary series is the true story of the Templet family. In 2019, Anthony Templet shot his father and never denied responsibility. This series pulls the curtain back on why Anthony did what he did. The murder’s motive has implications that extend beyond what happened.

Netflix

WEDNESDAY

Instant Dream Home

One home in disrepair. One family in need. An army of builders. A reveal like no other. In this home renovation series, deserving families get the surprise of their lives when their dilapidated house is transformed in just a few hours. Danielle Brooks hosts, with help from Adair Curtis, Paige Mobley, Nick Cutsumpas and Erik Curtis in addition to added muscle from the neighbourhood at large. Think Ocean’s 11 for home renovation!

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill home improvement show. Danielle Brooks (who famously played Taystee in “Orange Is the New Black”) hosts this series that can be best be described as renegade renovation. The concept is fairly simple: families are surprised when their homes are completely transformed in just 24 hours. The speed component coupled with the heartwarming reactions from the homeowners put this one on this week’s watch list.

THURSDAY

Password

This new series is actually a reboot of the 1960s game show. FRIDAY

Five Days at Memorial

As the water rose, resources depleted and exhaustion set in, the employees at Memorial Medical Center faced unimaginable choices following Hurricane Katrina. “Five Days at Memorial” premieres Aug. 12 on Apple TV+

The real-life story of a New Orleans hospital’s anguish following Hurricane Katrina is a collaboration between Carleton Cuse of “Lost” fame and John Ridley, who won an Oscar for “12 Years a Slave.” It tells the true story of Dr. Anna Pou (played by Vera Farmiga), who injected 23 patients with morphine (all of whom she assumed would die) while the Memorial Medical Center remained without power. Pick of the week.

Apple TV Plus

Never Have I Ever

For “Never Have I Ever” fans, the wait is finally over. The comedy is back for its third season. Mississauga’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan reprises her role as Devi Vishwakumar and, in this new season, Devi and her friends have to deal with being in actual relationships instead of continuing to try to find them. It will be interesting to see how things between Devi and Paxton (Darren Barnet) progress now that they are “official.” One other point of interest about this season is that it will mark the acting debut of Deacon Phillippe (Ryan Phillippe’s and Reese Witherspoon’s son). Phillippe plays Parker, a rival debate team member and troublemaker.

Netflix

A League of Their Own

Their game. Their rules. The new #LeagueOfTheirOwn series hits home Aug. 12 on Prime Video.

If you were a fan of Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna, who all starred in 1992’s “A League of Their Own” movie, it’s unclear whether you will love or hate this straight-to-series reboot. The new Prime Video show apparently exists independently of the Penny Marshall film but still features some of our favourite Rockford Peach references. O’Donnell appears as a bartender in the series. While the cast is made up of fairly new actors, Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) takes over as coach Casey “Dove” Porter. Toronto’s Patrick J. Adams also has a recurring role. For those unfamiliar with the story, it’s about a women’s pro baseball team created during the Second World War.

Prime Video

Day Shift

Jamie Foxx stars as a blue collar dad trying to provide for his family. While it appears he is just a pool cleaner in San Fernando Valley, that job is actually a cover for his real employment. Foxx’s character is a member of the International Union of Vampire Hunters. Kitschy, but it’s the summer, so we’ll take it.

Netflix

Cosmic Love

What if you didn’t need to go to the ends of the Earth to find love? This new entry in the reality dating genre features four singles who each represent one of the four astrological elements (yes, I am being serious), fire, earth, air and water. They are then matched with perspective spouses based on their zodiac signs (yes, I am still being serious). The dates take place in a romantic retreat that is run by a mystical, mythical and mysterious guide known as the Astro Chamber (I don’t think I need to convey my point again). Astrologers and bestselling authors Ophira and Tali Edut (known as the AstroTwins) serve as the matchmakers.

The Fool

Inspired by the life and standup of star and co-creator Chris Estrada, “This Fool” is an irreverent, cinematic half-hour comedy set in working class South Los Angeles. The show centers around Julio Lopez, a 30-year-old who still lives at home, has been dating his girlfriend on and off since high school and finds any excuse to avoid dealing with his own problems. Julio works at Hugs Not Thugs, a gang rehabilitation non-profit, where he butts heads with his older cousin Luis, an ex-gang member who just got out of prison and moved in with Julio and his family.

Chris Estrada stars in this new comedy, set in South Central Los Angeles. The comedian plays 30-year-old Julio Lopez, who still lives at home and works at Hugs Not Thugs, a non-profit that offers rehabilitation for former gang members.
