Dr Hilary shares ‘early’ dementia signs after Fiona Phillips’ diagnosis

Considered the most common cause of dementia in the UK, Alzheimer’s disease refers to a group of symptoms linked to an ongoing decline of brain functioning.

Fiona Phillips has revealed she was diagnosed with this dementia type at the age of 62.

The journalist and broadcaster discovered she had the condition a year ago after suffering from brain fog and anxiety, according to the Daily Mirror.

Following this announcement, Dr Hilary Jones has highlighted the “early” symptoms of the mind-robbing disease.

Speaking on ITV’s show Lorraine, he said: “Probably one of the earliest symptoms is short-term memory loss, so forgetting where you put things, forgetting people’s names, forgetting places, dates – that sort of thing.”

Apart from memory loss, other early dementia signs can include problems with:

  • Thinking and reasoning
  • Working things out
  • Making decisions
  • Language and finding the right words
  • Mood changes (for example, anger)
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Perception or orientation
  • Confusion.

If you are experiencing the warning signs, Dr Hilary urged you to come forward for a test.

The TV doctor said: “When people are struggling with brain fog, anxiety, depression, or memory problems, they get to a stage when it’s actually a relief to know.

“Then they can make plans and they’ve got an explanation for what’s going on in their lives and in their health.

“It’s not always something to be frightened of.”

How to reduce your risk of dementia

When it comes to a brain-healthy diet, what you cut down on is equally as important as what you include. The NHS recommends keeping your intake of saturated fat, salt and sugar in check.

Furthermore, you should strive for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week – think brisk walking, cycling or dancing.

Quitting smoking and keeping your alcohol intake low could also help lower your risk.
