Downton Abbey is reportedly set to return to the small screen, eight years after the finale.

The original period drama series ran for six seasons from 2011 until 2016. It followed the lives of the Crawley family and their staff who lived in and worked from the opulent Downton Abbey.

The first movie picked up from the TV programme which ended in 2015, and starred Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern and Dame Maggie Smith, who all reprised their roles in the film.

And it looks like the main cast could be returning for an upcoming special project.

A source shared: ‘There is a plan which is in development and there is a lot of excitement about.’

The insider added to Mail Online: ‘There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all of the big stars can return. People loved Downton. It became a British institution and it has been much missed since it left our screens.’

Metro.co.uk understands that no conversations have been had as of yet.

The movie adaptation, which premiered last year, continues with the theme of the Crawley’s embracing change – from Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) being encouraged to continue her work as a journalist along with being a mother, to the Earl of Grantham learning about cinematic experiences.

While many of these names were familiar to fans, new additions to the flick included Laura Haddock, Hugh Dancy, and Dominic West.

In a chat with the series’ official podcast, the Crown actor Dominic admitted it was ‘very daunting coming onto a show that’s been going for so long that is such a big phenomenon and such a big success’.

He added: ‘I’d never been to Highclere before… you go up the drive and you come over the brow of the hill and there it is.

‘It’s like some Disney castle and you can’t quite believe that it’s real. It’s such an extraordinary outline against, against the horizon and… so that was the first sort of intake of breath.’

Metro.co.uk has reached out to ITV for comment.

Downton Abbey is available to stream on Netflix.
