‘Double standards’ as AFLW teams get COVID exemption

The Western Australian government is being accused of hypocrisy and double standards, after it was announced on Wednesday afternoon that AFLW teams could fly into the state, despite strict COVID-19 regulations.

Players from Carlton and Collingwood will fly into Perth on charter flights for their matches against Fremantle and West Coast, respectively.

They will be tested and fly home immediately after their games.

“They must comply with all the quarantine requirements that the chief health officer has set out.” A WA police spokesperson told AAP.

“I’ve got to say the AFL has acted very professionally over the last two seasons and we’ve had no difficulties in the way those matches have been conducted.”

The announcement was met mostly with anger from people who have been isolated from their families for the better part of two years.

Fremantle could end the weekend in first place on the ladder if they were to win and Adelaide lose, while Collingwood could sit as high as third should they beat the Eagles.

Both West Coast and Carlton have struggled to start the year, winning just one apiece.
