It’s not just London where the property market has lost the plot.
Up in Scotland, £185,000 could get you a house… or a double garage in Edinburgh.
Yep, there’s now a parking space in Edinburgh that’s on sale for more than the average price of a house in Scotland (£164,099, in case you were interested).
To be fair, though, the garage is quite a nice one. Plus, it’s in a prime location, in a ‘sought after’ part of Edinburgh, Lynedoch Place Lane.
We just can’t imagine having £185k spare for a place to park up a car.
The garage is described as ‘secure and spacious’, offering 337 sq ft of space.
Savills, who are selling the property, suggest it could be converted into a single unit plus storage space, or if you’ve got two cars, both could be kept here.
Ben Fox, a property agent with Savills, said: ‘This is a secure and spacious double garage in the West End that would be ideal for parking or storage.’
The price of this particular garage may raise some eyebrows, but it’s part of a major trend in the city.
Parking in Edinburgh is getting increasingly pricey as space is so hard to come by.
We’re likely to keep seeing expensive parking spaces around the country.
In December, a London garage listed as a ‘terraced property’ went on the market for £25,000, while in Cornwall, where tourism makes parking a real struggle, one tiny space went for £100k.
Perhaps it’s time to embrace public transport and cycling if you’re hoping to get on the property ladder. Otherwise you might have to take out a mortgage just so you have a place to park your car.
