Donald Glover Could Join the Spider-Verse… As Hypno-Hustler
While he already made an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming as Aaron Davis, the Atlanta, Solo, and Community star Donald Glover looks to be set to star and produce a movie about the Spider-Man villain Hypno-Hustler.
As reported by THR, Glover has been circling the Spider-Verse for some time as there were many who wanted him to star in The Amazing Spider-Man before Andrew Garfield secured the role. He did lend his voice to Spider-Man/Miles Morales in Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man, but he hasn’t taken on a big starring role as of yet.
Hypno-Hustler may not be what fans were expecting for Glover in this universe, but sources have said that he was “sparked to the musical aspect of the character and the fact that he has less Marvel canon baggage, freeing him to greater interpretations.”
The villain was created by Bill Mantlo, the same writer who created Rocket Racoon, and the artist Frank Springer. He first appeared in 1978’s Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man No. 24 and his real name was Antoine Delsoin. He was the leader of a band called the Mercy Killers who would rob their audience using hypnosis tech found in the instruments.
Hypno-Hustler did not make our list of the 25 best Spider-Man villains, but as James Gunn had previously done with the then-lesser-known Guardians of the Galaxy, that doesn’t mean a new age of popularity can’t rise if the right pieces are put into place.
Sources say one of those potential right pieces is Eddie Murphy’s son Myles Murphy, who is attached to write the film that has yet to be given a title.
Glover recently wrapped up Atlanta and is working on developing a new Mr. and Mrs. Smith show that he will star in alongside PEN15’s Maya Erskine. As for Spidey, fans can check out the latest trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and discover all the variations that appeared in the footage.
