Domestic gross box office collection dropped 15% in H1 to Rs 4,868 crore: Ormax

According to Ormax Media’s The India Box Office Report, the cumulative India box office collection for the first half of the calendar year is Rs 4,868 crore (gross), which is 15% lower than the same period in 2022.

At this rate, the report stated that 2023 is predicted to end with a box office of Rs 9,736 crore, which is 8% less than the annual box office of Rs 10,637 crore in 2022. Ormax Media uses Gross Box Office as the unified measure for this report.

However, it added that the second half of 2023 features a good lineup of films that are predicted to perform well, particularly Jawan, Salaar, and Tiger 3. This puts the year on track to surpass, or at least come close to, the 2022 gross box office.

Pathaan is the top film in the first half of 2023, accounting for more than 13% of the year’s total collections.

The Hindi language now accounts for 37% of the total, up from 33% in 2022, while Kannada has dropped from 8% to 2%. The share of South Indian films has dropped from 50% to 44%, largely because of a steep drop in Kannada’s share.

Adipurush, despite multiple controversies and poor audience likability, takes the second spot on the strength of its huge opening in the Telugu and Hindi markets. Fast X is the only Hollywood film to feature in the top 10 films list at the end of June 2023.According to the report, the box office crossed the Rs 1,000 crore mark in June 2023, thanks to the robust opening of multilingual Adipurush and the creditable box office performances of Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (Hindi), Carry On Jatta 3 (Punjabi), Baipan Bhaari Deva (Marathi), and Maamannan (Tamil). This makes June 2023 the second-best box office month of the year, after January, which was fuelled by Pathaan’s phenomenal box office performance.

The Indian film industry’s box office collections reached an all-time high in 2019, totaling Rs 10,948 crore, followed by 2022, the only other year in which the Rs 10,000 crore mark was exceeded.
