The quest to achieve more volume in our hair is age-old. If you’re someone who struggles to get that bouncy movement in your locks, you’ll have tried all the tricks in the book.

If you’re looking for a new hair cut, colour, style or technique to try, you can probably find it on TikTok.

One of the more recent hair trends taking over beauty TikTok is a new volumising trick to try: washing your hair upside down

Starting within the curly hair community, as part of the ‘curly girl method’, many on the platform say washing their hair upside down helps them to achieve definition in their curls and cleans their thick hair better.

Curly girls also say that scrubbing the roots upside down automatically lifts the hair once its dried.

But while this technique may help people with curly hair, the bad news is that it’s unlikely to help achieve volume for everyone of all hair types.

Marta Teixeira, Certified Trichologist at Clini Hair busts the myth that washing hair upside down helps to achieve volume.

She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘What will help achieve more volume will be the way you style your hair after you shower, and using volumizing products.

‘These products can be shampoos, powders, sprays, dry shampoos, etc. Most volumising products contain ingredients that help lift hair away from the head, resulting in more fullness and body,’ she says.

For those who want to add lots of volume building into their hair styling routine, Teixeira recommends using a volumising shampoo that’s more clarifying.

‘Volumising shampoos can help make hair appear fuller and thicker since they typically contain fewer conditioning ingredients, so they’re less likely to weigh hair down,’ she says.

She adds that if someone has wavy hair, using leave-in products that are lightweight will help (but it might not give as much curl definition).

‘Mousses and foams are ideal for creating volume too. A hair pick is a must-have tool for adding volume in the right places. Blow drying whilst focusing on the roots also helps to increase volume as well,’ she says.

Flipping your hair upside down in the shower might be a good way to make sure you’re covering all bases with cleaning and clarifying (we often miss that part by our neck) but as lift and movement starts with the roots, you’re better off focusing up top with great shampoos, a blow dry, and good old Velcro rollers.
