Good Morning Britain viewers thought they’d switched to a meditation programme when Monday’s episode suddenly began playing dream-like chill music.
Hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray were in the middle of an interview with a junior doctor about the NHS strikes, which will see staff at dozens of trusts and other health bodies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland taking industrial action over pay and conditions.
Dr Vivek Trivedi, co-chair of the BMA Junior Doctors Committee, was explaining how poor pay and working conditions are causing doctors to leave the profession or move abroad. A survey also found that junior doctors and nurses were struggling to pay off their credit card bills after a string of pay cuts.
However, shortly before 7am, Dr Trivedi’s interview was abruptly switched to ethereal music although he was seen continuing to chat to the seemingly oblivious presenters.
The music played for around two minutes before normal programming resumed at 6:54am and sound returned to the studio.
Reacting to the bizarre moment, one viewer joked: ‘Has #GMB just gone full chillout mode unexpectedly or have those magic mushrooms from 7 years ago finally kicked in?’
Another viewer wondered: ‘Have you been hacked? Am I hearing ethereal music?’
Also confused, one added: ‘Has GMB got relaxation music playing?? I thought it was my phone connecting to the speaker for a minute!’
‘We can hear nothing but ambient sounds,’ another viewer stated.
Frustrated at missing out on Dr Trivedi’s important interview, one said: ‘Missed all of what he said GMB. Hope we get a summary.’
Later in the episode, Charlotte offered an apology to viewers but failed to give an explanation, saying: ‘Some viewers in the London region may have experienced sound issues.
‘Very sorry we apologise for that, hopefully everything is sorted for you now.’
