DIY Christmas: How to upcycle your baubles – a step-by-step guide

Squeeze some more life out of your tired old baubles (Picture: Getty)

Last year’s baubles seem out of date? No need to buy new – simply paint them with tester pots in this year’s hottest Christmas colour, says interiors guru Annie Sloan. Here’s how…

You will need

  • Old baubles
  • Chalk paint (I used Emperor’s Silk, Aubusson Blue and Antoinette)
  • Small flat brushes
  • Detail brushes – round and square
  • Clear chalk paint wax
  • Water
  • Containers

To make

1. Paint your bauble all over in Chalk Paint in Antoinette. You may need two coats to create an even colour. Leave to dry. We add string to our baubles before painting so they are easier to hang when drying.

2. Mix one part of Emperor’s Silk to one part Aubusson Blue to create a deep aubergine purple. Using a large brush, paint a line over the base pink with your new purple colour. Don’t worry about the line being absolutely perfect as you want a handmade feel to the overall look.

If needed, add a bit of water to your purple mix before painting, to create a smoother texture to the paint. This can make the paint glide easier over the bauble and create sharp lines, too.

3. Try different wavy lines and patterns on your baubles for a bohemian look. I love using a rounded brush to create wavy lines, and using a square-cut brush for straighter lines. You can always practise your mark making on paper before painting over your bauble, too.

4. Leave to dry and then add Clear Chalk Paint Wax to deepen the colour, seal in your design and prevent it from smudging – then you can use your baubles for Christmases to come!
