As per the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin, Chhoti Diwali falls on Chaturdashi aka the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha.
Chhoti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, is celebrated one day before Diwali. However, this year it coincides with Badi Diwali and will be celebrated on November 12. As per the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin, it falls on Chaturdashi aka the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha. Narak Chaturdashi is often confused with Kali Chaudas, as both are different festivals celebrated on the same Tithi.
On this day, Yama, the god of death is also worshiped by lighting a lamp which is said to protect one from the sufferings of hell (narak). It is believed that performing simple astrological remedies on the night of Chhoti Diwali can alleviate all troubles from life, ushering in peace and prosperity to prevail in your home. Here are 5 simple things you should do on Chhoti Diwali to bring happiness and peace.
Take Bath: As per astrologer and Vastu Consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma, on Chhoti Diwali, one should take a bath early morning after an oil massage. Devotees believe that Goddess Lakshmi resides in this oil and it brings happiness and prosperity to the family.
Light Yama’s Lamp: On the night of Chhoti Diwali, light a Yama’s lamp in the south direction. This will help in removing all the fear of untimely death and will provide relief from hell. Make sure it doesn’t get off immediately. Worshipping Yamraj on this day can provide freedom from hell.
Worship Goddess Kalika: People should also worship Goddess Kalika as Kali Chaudas is also observed on this day. This will remove all the trouble and problems from your life and Mata Kalika will fulfill all your wishes.
Clean House: The festival of Diwali spans five days, including Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Badi Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. If you haven’t cleaned or decorated the house by Dhanteras, it’s advisable to take note and ensure that it is done on Chhoti Diwali. Light a diya or lamp and place it in a dark corner. This gesture is believed to invite Goddess Lakshmi into your home, showering blessings and abundance.
Perform Puja: On Chhoti Diwali aka Narak Chaturdashi, perform puja with Roli, rose, and red sandalwood and then tie it in a red cloth. Keeping it in the safest place in the house brings wealth and prevents unnecessary spending. It also welcomes prosperity in the family.
