American comedian and TV host Seth Meyers has slammed Donald Trump for his reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

While the rest of the world has been watching events unfold in shock and fear, Trump was on stage lauding Putin’s strategy, just hours before the Russian president ordered troops to invade its neighboring country.

At a fundraiser on Wednesday, Trump had said: ‘I mean, he’s taking over a country for $2 worth of sanctions, I’d say that’s pretty smart.

‘He’s taking over a country, really a vast, vast, location, a great piece of land with a lot of people, and just walking right in.’

Meyers was completely shocked and disgusted, saying on his Late Night chat show: ‘First of all, stop talking about everything like it’s a f***ing real estate deal.

‘It’s an illegal war against a sovereign nation, not an empty lot in Atlantic City,’ he said.

The TV host added: ‘Second, if you ever find yourself at a fancy high-dollar fundraiser clinking champagne glasses while the keynote speaker applauds an illegal and catastrophic war that will cause mass suffering and destabilize an entire continent, maybe take a moment to text your therapist and ask, “Am I a bad person?”‘

A day before, Trump had hit out at President Biden saying Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would not have happened on his watch, whilst at the same time describing Putin’s initial moves of invasion as ‘genius’ and ‘savvy’.

Meyers was not the only late-night talk show host to try and make light out of a very dark, sombre day.

Stephen Colbert said: ‘Over the last five years, we’ve seen democracy reportedly undermined, tragic, unprecedented firestorms, a global pandemic.

‘Well this morning, Vladimir Putin looked at all of that and said, “Hold my vodka.”‘

He added, referring to Trump-supporting Putin: ‘Amidst all this horror, it’s important to keep our eyes on the unhinged fascist lunatic.’

Putin declared war around 5am local time on Thursday, ordering troops into the neighboring country in a three-pronged invasion from the north, east and south, appearing to target the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Kherson.

Missiles were shot at several cities, and huge explosions are continuing to rattle Kyiv in the early hours of this morning as the second day of the incursion began with a missile barrage.

Russian forces are now about 20 miles from Kyiv, with US officials warning that the capital could fall quickly.

Late Night with Seth Meyers airs on NBC in the US.
