Didier Drogba gatecrashes interview to hail Chelsea ace after Club World Cup win
Kai Havertz, who scored Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League winner, converted a 117th-minute penalty in Abu Dhabi after the final against Palmeiras went to extra-time.
Romelu Lukaku headed home Chelsea’s opener but Brazilian side Palmeiras equalised midway through the second half through Raphael Veiga.
Havertz’s winner means Chelsea have now won every possible trophy under the ownership of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, while Azpilicueta becomes the first player in the club’s history to win every trophy available to him.
Azpilicueta has lifted the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, Super League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and now Club World Cup since joining Chelsea in August 2012.
The Spaniard was reflecting on Chelsea’s victory in Abu Dhabi when former Blues striker Drogba interrupted the Chelsea TV interview and said: ‘This guy, in two years, has won more trophies than us in 10!’
Azpilicueta, meanwhile, said: ‘I’m really proud. We have a come long way to be here.
‘It’s a moment to be proud and enjoy it because we know how difficult it is to win this trophy. 2012 hurt a lot and we took more than nine years to be back. We missed out in 2012 and we didn’t want to miss the cup again.
‘This time the medal is gold, and the other one is silver. I made sure I wasn’t coming back with the same colour of medal. It was a difficult game. World champions, it’s not easy. We showed the team we are.
‘When I arrived in 2012 I couldn’t imagine the journey I would go on. I’m really proud to be the Chelsea captain leading the club on and off the pitch.
‘This title feels very good because it’s the first time in our history. The club deserves it, the owner deserves it, and I’m proud we achieved it.’
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel dedicated the Club World Cup win to Blues owner Abramovich, who was in attendance in Abu Dhabi to enjoy the success.
‘It is for him, there is no doubt that it is for him,’ said Tuchel, who was appointed by Abramovich in January 2021.
‘We met quickly on the pitch after the final, he said “congratulations’ and I said “congratulations, it’s for you, it’s your club and it’s your input and your passion that made this possible” and I’m happy to be part of it.
‘So of course the trophy is for him.’
