Did Marvel’s Most Powerful Doom Break the Rules of Magic?
In Avengers #53, the most powerful version of the villainous Doctor Doom appears to have broken the established rules of magic in the Marvel Universe.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Avengers #53, available now from Marvel Comics.
The Avengers have faced some of the most powerful enemies the Marvel Universe has to offer, but they’ve never dealt with anything quite like the Multiversal calamity being wrought by the new Masters of Evil. These alternate versions of Marvel’s greatest villains are terrifying on their own, but it is their leader, Doom Supreme, who has proven to be the most powerful of them all, possibly breaking the established rules of magic in the process.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have come under attack by the new Masters of Evil in Avengers #53 (by Jason Aaron, Juan Frigeri, David Curiel, and VC’s Cory Petit). All of these villains have left a horrifying impact upon heroes, but it is Doom Supreme who has wrought the most damage. This hybrid of Doom and the Sorcerer Supreme has unleashed spells never seen before in the mainstream Marvel Universe, and the results are devastating. Even worse, the cost of his powerful magic is being paid by billions of innocents from across the universes.
The Marvel Universe’s magic has a long and established history of coming at a very serious cost. Usually, this cost in paid by the consumption of some of the caster’s life if no other sacrifice is made. While powerful mages such as Doctor Strange have become adept at shirking this cost, this has never been done in quite the manner that Doom Supreme has implemented here. Rather than paying the cost of his magic himself, Doom uses the life force of unwitting victims from across the Multiverse to fuel his power.
In this despicable manner, Doom Supreme has secured a nearly limitless source of power from across the Multiverse. Entire worlds are destroyed as the powerful mage call forth meteors that he hurls into Avengers Mountain, and the lives of a hundred monks are lost to cast a single spells in his battle against Jane Foster, aka the Valkyrie. As devastating as the true cost of Doom Supreme’s magic is, the fact that he is able to wield it at all is equal parts horrific and intriguing. This also calls into question just how much untapped potential there is for the rest of Marvel’s magic users unscrupulous enough to employ such a method of wielding power.
Doom Supreme is an incredibly powerful sorcerer, and by revealing the sources of his magic, he has opened the door for other mages to follow in his footsteps.
Although it is unlikely that a heroic mage would be willing to use a similar method to stop the villain, just knowing what Doom is doing could present a clue as to how the heroes can cut him off from his tremendous power and ultimately defeat the magic wielding tyrant.
