Dia de los Muertos, glowing Jack-o-lanterns and pumpkin beers on tap this weekend in Denver
Jack o’lanterns galore at Hudson Gardens
Thursday-Monday. There’s nothing like the glow of 7,000 hand-carved Jack-o-lanterns to get you in the mood for Halloween, and the Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group will have them at Hudson Gardens Thursday through Monday nights at 6:30.
Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns “will delight adults and children alike” with the glowing display, as well as larger-than-life pumpkin displays, a magical carnival, a nautical seascape, pirate ship, dinosaurs and dragons, according to organizers. Tickets range from $21 to $35 and are available at magicofthejackolanterns.com. Hudson Gardens is at 6115 S. Santa Fe Drive in Littleton
Speak to me, ye goblet of wine
Thursday-Sunday. The staff at Noble Riot, a Denver wine bar that opened in 2019, love Syrah, a grape varietal that produces big-bodied reds, which are perfect for fall. As such, Noble Riot, at 1336 27th St., is celebrating its third annual Syrah Week through Oct. 30. Guests will enjoy various specials, including special offerings by the glass or by the bottle.
On Sunday, the bar will raise a glass (and who knows what else) with an All Hallows Eve wine school and séance from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “The Syrah Séance class will explore the spirits of departed pioneers of Syrah with a worldly selection of earth-bound wines,” Noble Riot said. It will be taught by certified sommelier and assistant general manager Matt Strauch. Tickets are $69 per person and available at exploretock.com.
Fall fest in Tennyson business district
Saturday. The family-friendly Tennyson Street Fall Fest is back for its seventh year in the popular Tennyson Street business district in Denver’s Berkeley neighborhood. Things kick off between 41st and 43d avenues with a pet parade and costume contest, street-wide trick or treating and live music from The Copper Children. There will also be local vendors and artisans.
General admission tickets are $12 at eventbrite.com, while entrance for kids under 10 years old is free. Registration for the Pet Costume Parade is an additional $5. All proceeds of the Tennyson Street Fall Fest benefit the Tennyson Berkeley Business Association.
Saturday. For a more adult-centered activity on Tennyson, Hops & Pie Artisan Pizzeria, 3920 Tennyson St., once again hosts its annual Pumpkin Fest from noon to 4 p.m. The restaurant will tap at least 10 different pumpkin beers and ciders from around the country.
In addition, there will be pumpkin soup and pumpkin spice doughnuts (from Hops & Pie’s sister business, Berkeley Donuts). The Grown A$$ Man Band plays from noon to 4 p.m. as well, and the pizzeria makes a great costume-watching spot for the Tennyson Fall Fair, up the street.
Celebrating the Day of the Dead
Friday-Tuesday. There is a wide variety of Dia de los Muertos events taking place around the metro area through Nov. 1, when the Mexican holiday is actually celebrated. On Friday, Oct. 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 29, from noon to 6 p.m., you’ll find the annual Muertos en Westwood/Noches de Catarina celebration at the RISE Westwood Campus, 3800 Morrison Road. It includes local vendors, a community meal, youth activities and traditional dancing.
There’s also a large Día de los Muertos altar exhibition on display at Stanley Marketplace, 2502 Dallas St. in Aurora, through mid-November. Created by local fashion designer Norberto “Beto” Mojardīn, the altar’s theme is “dedicated to our immigrants and refugees’ loved ones who didn’t make it to their American dream or died trying to find a better place to live,” Mojardīn said in a statement. On Nov. 1, performances of Aztec Folkloric Dance and traditional Mexican dances will illustrate the historical significance of the exhibition. Visitors are invited to bring their photos of deceased friends and relatives to place at the altar.
