Destiny 2 Studio Bungie Wins $12 Million in Lawsuit Against Cheat Developer

Bungie has emerged victorious in a recent lawsuit against Romanian cheat-seller Mihai Claudiu-Florentin. Bungie will now be rewarded $12 million in damages after winning the lawsuit, as reported by TheGamePost.

The lawsuit against the cheat developer and his website VeteranCheats was filed back in 2021.

Bungie accused that Mihai Claudiu-Florentin “developed and sold” the cheat software called VeteranCheats. This cheat allowed players to gain an unfair advantage in Destiny 2, a live-service multiplayer game. Cheats such as auto-aim and seeing through walls were sold at the website.

The studio claimed this was copyright infringement and it also hurt the overall enjoyment of the game for those playing it fairly, which in turn hurt Bungie’s potential revenue through in-game purchases.

Mihai Claudiu-Florentin will have to pay nearly $12 million to the Destiny 2 makers

The lawsuit also alleged violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), breach of contract, intentional interference with contractual relations, and the Washington Consumer Protection Act (CPA).

Bungie did not hold back in this lawsuit and sought $12,059,912.98 in damages including $11,696,000 in statutory damages ($2,000 for each of the 5,848 cheat software downloads). Bungie will be awarded this amount in full.

The court has put a permanent injunction against Claudiu-Florentin and they can never engage in any future Destiny 2 copyright violations.

NicheGamer has pointed out that a subpoena of payment processor Stripe revealed that the Destiny 2 cheats brought only $146,662.28 in revenue over 5,848 sales ($25 per cheat). So, it’ll be interesting to see how Claudiu-Florentin and VeteranCheats will manage to pay up.
