Kate, 55, has even admitted to The Sun how Derek will sometimes lie in bed with “tears rolling down his face” as he desperately struggles to move and speak.

The devoted wife and mum-of-two says: “Derek is trapped, but he fights on. We cling on to the good days.”

Kate has been tirelessly caring for her husband ever since he was rushed to hospital with Covid at the height of the pandemic in March 2020.

He was placed on a ventilator and put in an induced coma — with Kate and the couple’s two kids Darcey, 16, and Billy, 13, unable to visit him due to strict Covid rules.

Some 13 months later, 55-year-old Derek was finally allowed home.

Having been hospitalised for so long, his body was ravaged with various crippling conditions and Derek remains confined to a bed and wheelchair. He is still unable to walk.

Last summer, Kate thought she was going to lose Derek after he contracted sepsis following a kidney infection.

Describing life now, Kate admits: “Every day is a roller coaster.

“Derek’s spirit fluctuates. Sometimes he lies there, unable to move, with tears rolling down his face and it is heart-breaking.

“But if it’s hard for us, I cannot imagine how hard it must be for him.”

Derek, a former political lobbyist, needs around the clock care from a team of health professionals.

Kate has spoken to The Sun about the debilitating financial costs she faces as a result.

The popular presenter is issuing a call to arms for Sun readers, those who have experienced first-hand the overworked care and health system in the UK.
