Dentist warns you shouldn’t keep your toothbrush in the bathroom

After tumbling out of bed and into the bathroom, brushing your teeth is probably something you do on autopilot by now.

A squeeze of toothpaste and a session of brushing later, you are good to go and start your day.

While you might not think twice about this practice, a dentist has taken to TikTok to reveal a gross reason why you should re-evaluate where you keep your toothbrush.

Your bathroom sink might seem like the most convenient place to store the cleaning device but there’s a catch.

In the video, with over 120,000 likes, the dentist explained that no matter how clean you keep your bathroom, the presence of a toilet in the room could mean there’s poo bacteria on your toothbrush.

Speaking on his TikTok channel, Dr Jordan Brown said: “Everyone needs to know this about their toothbrush.

“If you can see your toilet and your toothbrush in the same vision without moving your head, there’s a 99 percent chance you have faecal matter on your toothbrush.

“Aerosols from the toilet spray up in the air and they get everywhere including your toothbrush.”

Whenever you flush the loo, it causes something called a “faecal fountain” or “a toilet plume”.

This phenomenon describes the dispersal of microscopic particles coming from the toilet bowl to the surrounding space.

Worryingly, this can include your toothbrush, resting in its usual place on the bathroom sink.

Therefore, Dr Brown has urged people to close their toilet seats when they flush.

Alternatively, you can consider storing your toothbrush somewhere else like your bedroom.

Alternatively, you can also purchase covers to place on the toothbrush head to keep the nasty bacteria away.
