Bad breath – we’ve all had it. But some things make it smellier than others.

One dentist has revealed how some common foods are not so favourable when it comes to having good, fresh breath.

Dr Stewart Beggs, from Chelsea, west London, explained on TikTok the usual offenders when it comes to nasty odours staying in your mouth.

Most of us are probably aware of particularly pungent items that leave lingering smells such as garlic and onions.

As delicious as they may be, these items can stick around for a while in our mouths, said Dr Beggs.

He added that fish can also leave the same impact, particularly if you’re eating things like tuna.

Dr Beggs explained that halitosis – or chronic bad breath– can be made worse if you smoke too.

He advised avoiding things that leave you dehydrated too, such as alcohol or coffee.

This is because if you don’t have enough water in your body to produce a healthy amount of saliva, you could end up with a dry mouth. This, in turn, gives bacteria the chance to stick around and develop unpleasant odors on your tongue or teeth.

Dr Beggs’ video comes after another viral dentist video byy Dr Surina Sehgal, a general and cosmetic dentist, who shared the mouth care items she would avoid.

She explained: ‘Avoid alcohol in all mouthwashes, it’s way too harsh’ as it can dissolve the teeth’s natural enamel.

Dr Sehgal also advised avoiding DIY dental kits which contain scalpels to remove enamel at home – something that may do more harm than good.

Using a Boots own-brand kit as an example, she said: ‘The instruments here contain really sharp edges, which make it easy to traumatise your gums and chip your teeth.’

She also said quick fix teeth whiteners are not worth it.

The expert continued: ‘This [product] works by a very clever colour illusion but doesn’t actually whiten your teeth.

‘So don’t believe the hype guys!’

She added: ‘I see these home whitening kits everywhere. Be really careful as some contain mild acids and abrasives which can actually wear down your enamel long-term.’

Dr Sehgal said the same for charcoal toothpaste and said you should avoid them if you can. She claimed: ‘[They] contain abrasive particles to remove surface stains but daily use of this can cause your enamel to thin.’
