Demand to convert Odisha colleges into universities gathers pace – Times of India
Bhubaneswar: After the state government converted two autonomous colleges into universities this month, alumni and locals of many other colleges renewed their demands for university tag to their alma maters. So far, locals of three major colleges have come up with such a demand.
One of these colleges was Shri Krushna Chandra Gajapati (SKCG) Autonomous College at Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district founded in 1896 under the patronage of Raja of Paralakhemundi Goura Chandra Gajapati Narayana Deo. Later Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati had upgraded this institute into a first-grade college in 1936.
Originally affiliated to Madras University and then to Andhra University, this college was one of the first five affiliated colleges with which Utkal University started functioning in November 1943. After Berhampur University came into existence on January 2, 1967, the college came under this university till date.
“It is a long-standing demand of Paralakhemundi to give university status to our college. When I was president of the Students’ Union of SKCG College in 1993, I had raised the issue of converting our college into a university. So far, we have requested several officials and politicians on this matter, but in vain. We will again submit a memorandum to Gajapati collector, minister and chief minister in this regard,” said Umesh Prasad Rath, convenor of Old Students’ Association of SKCG Autonomous College.
Similarly, alumni of Bhadrak Autonomous College established on July 6, 1948, have been demanding university status.
Sangram Acharya, convenor of Bhadrak Unnati Sangharsh Samiti, said they have been demanding university status to Bhadrak Autonomous College, but nobody paid heed to their requests. “After the chief minister announced plans to convert Vikram Deb College Jeypore to university, we submitted a memorandum to the Bhadrak district collector to look into our demand. We are planning to give a bandh call in Bhadrak as a part of our movement,” he added.
Another one was Kendrapara Autonomous College established on February 12, 1959. Student wing of Congress had staged a bike rally and meeting on October 4, 2021, on different issues including upgrading Kendrapara College into a university.
“We have been raising this issue before the state government in a regular interval. After the announcement of conversion of Dharanidhar Autonomous College Keonjhar into a university, we also demand university status for Kendrapara College. If Dharanidhar College gets it, why not Kendrapada,” said Ganeswar Behera, congress leader.

A delegation of Kendrapada Medical College Kriyanusthan Committee led by Congress leader Ganeswar Behera met the Odisha governor here on Wednesday and urged him to look after their demand for the establishment of a medical college and hospital at Kendrapada.
