Deathstroke’s Daughter Does Not Trust Robin’s Family
Ravager believes it would be dangerous to tell Robin the truth about Respawn’s origins. However, it is not Robin that worries her, but his family.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Deathstroke Inc. #7, on sale now.
Ravager’s time mentoring Damian Wayne has established that she only wants the best for him. She’s tried to steer him in the right direction, away from the manipulations and violence of his family’s past.
However, while she may trust Robin, in Deathstroke Inc. #7 (by Joshua Williamson, Stephen Segovia, Hi-Fi, and Steve Wands) she disagreed with Respawn about telling Robin where he came from, believing it to be too dangerous. While this may imply that she distrusts Robin, all of her actions contradict this, and given what was later revealed about Respawn’s identity, it seems more likely that she fears Robin’s family and what they might do if they learn the truth.
What Ravager feared being leaked is that Respawn is technically Damian Wayne’s half-brother, being a clone made from the genetic material of Deathstroke and Talia al Ghul at the behest of Ra’s al Ghul. Respawn’s very existence made him a potential threat to the al Ghul family. He has already expressed a desire to murder Ra’s for all the pain he suffered because of him, but more than he is technically an al Ghul. He has a place in the succession of the family should he fight for it. As a highly competent fighter, Respawn could almost certainly win over a good number of the al Ghuls’ followers, especially those that believe Damian is too soft for the role now.
As such, Ravager would prefer that Respawn’s identity remain hidden. It isn’t that she distrusts Robin, it’s that she doesn’t trust the secret would remain hidden for long if he learned the truth. Damian in the past has shown an affection for his cloned siblings, and there is nothing to suggest that he would react differently to Respawn. However, it was Ra’s who made Respawn and inflicted so much pain on him for most of his life. While he had plans for the young clone, they never came to fruition, and Respawn’s reappearance now would be a threat on sight.
This isn’t even considering what Talia might do if she learned the truth. It could very well trigger a war within the al Ghul family, with Talia being livid that one of her children was kept away from her, or more likely, that her father violated her genetic privacy and used her in such a way. Of course, the possibility exists that Talia may wish to claim Respawn for herself, in him is a potential heir that could be more viable than Damian. Her son has demonstrated an unwillingness to kill, but her other son is a proven killer.
This isn’t factoring in the Deathstroke of it all. As shown in the very same issue, Deathstroke has already accepted Respawn as his son and promised that no one would ever harm him. If the truth got out, while any number of things might happen, the one guarantee is that someone will come after Respawn, either to kill him or claim him for themselves. This would ensure war with Deathstroke as he tries to protect his son and ensure the power structure of the DC Universe shifts forever.
