De Goey clinic puts Magpies into preliminary final

Collingwood star Jordan De Goey has helped his side lock in a preliminary final meeting with Sydney after the Pies trounced the Dockers by 20 points in front of a packed MCG on Saturday night.

De Goey had his fingerprints all over the do-or-die match, notching up 24 disposals, a season-high 12 score involvements and gaining 626m – the most of any player on the ground.

“In a night where a lot of Collingwood players have played well, Jordan De Goey, I think he’s been the standout,” Jobe Watson said on Seven’s coverage.

Collingwood got off to the perfect start kicking the first four goals of the match.

Exciting youngster Jack Ginnivan kicked the opening goal, soccering the ball through the middle sticks before a minute had even ticked down on the clock.

Down the other end, Rory Lobb tried to respond but could only manage a behind from his first set shot of the evening.

Fremantle stared down a big quarter-time deficit for a second straight week after failing to score a major in the opening term.

The Dockers finally scored their elusive first major in the opening minute of the second term through forward Lachie Schultz after he caught John Noble holding the ball in front of goal.

As the pressure on Fremantle escalated, wingman Blake Acres nursed a right knee concern after an earlier instance of friendly fire with teammate Andrew Brayshaw.

But inaccuracy allowed Justin Longmuir’s men to hang around as Collingwood sprayed six behinds to take a 28-point advantage into half time.

The Pies continued peppering the goals to start the second half with another three straight behinds before Ginnivan finally broke trough with a miraculous snap through heavy traffic to settle things.

If Brody Mihocek’s goal didn’t seal the match with a game-high 38-point lead with over a quarter still left to play, Mason Cox’s first snag to start off the last term did.

Michael Frederick scored back-to-back goals in a last ditch effort to conjure some momentum for Fremantle, but they left their run too late with Collingwood holding a stranglehold over the match.

In a moment of consolation for Fremantle fans, retiring legend David Mundy kicked one last goal before hanging off the boots.

The 37-year-old fired on the run from 50m out to convert goal No.161.
