DC’s Trial of the Amazons #1 Comic Review
Trial of the Amazons #1 unites the three tribes of the Amazons for a contest of champions in a tense tale filled with electrifying visuals.
The dimensional rift in Themyscira, called the Doom’s Doorway, goes straight down to Hades, where a champion has always stood on guard to keep the forces of evil at bay. With the ascension of Nubia as Queen of the Amazons, that post has been left vacant. Previous Wonder Woman stories have followed the Bana-Mighdall clan of Amazons as they decide to take part in the upcoming contest, with the sole aim of taking the throne. Unbeknownst to them, the Wonder Girls and the Esquecida are also coming to throw their hats in the ring. Published by DC Comics, Trial of the Amazons #1 is the first Wonder Woman crossover in 30 years and shakes up the status quo at a cosmic scale.
Trial of the Amazons #1 is written by Stephanie Williams, Vita Ayala, Joëlle Jones, Michael Conrad, and Becky Cloonan with artwork from Laura Braga, Skylar Patridge, Joelle Jones, Elena Casagrande, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Jordie Bellaire. The comic unites all the banners of the Amazon under one roof. Themyscira is busy preparing for the contest as Queen Nubia and her counsels, including the former queen Hippolyta, go over the details. Elsewhere, Queen Atalanta and Faruka of the Bana-Mighdall have gathered at the Themysciran Embassy fully armed, demanding entry into Paradise Island. Once in the presence of their peers, Faruka immediately starts insulting Nubia and the Amazons, but her uncourteous behavior is cut short with the dramatic arrival of the newest Wonder Girl, Yara Flor.
Trial of the Amazons #1 is a busy story, linking multiple narratives and introducing the players on the board one by one. It is one colossal collaborative effort between rising stars of the industry that draws inspiration from the breadth of comic book history and plants the seeds of change while moving forward into the future. The atmosphere in the book is charged with tension, as Amazonians from every fold of life make their case. The peace between the Themysciran Amazons and the Bana-Mighdall balances on a knife’s edge. The sudden arrival of the Esquecida completes the melting pot. Personalities clash and trash talk flies as is customary before any fight. In a story with so many moving cogs, anything can go very wrong at a moment’s notice.
Gorgeous artwork adorns every section of the book, capturing the characters in striking poses and regal, ornate attires. This issue is brought to life by a group of artists, each contributing to the style and overall look. Trial of the Amazons #1 embraces the fact that the world consists of women of different ethnicities and skin tones who have different hairstyles and unique personalities, all of which overflow their panels. Even obvious lettering issues become a minor inconvenience when buoyed by brightly colored, awe-inspiring art. Singling out a particular artist or colorist becomes an arduous task, but there are certainly some pages that stand out from the rest.
Trial of the Amazons #1 is an eventful story masquerading as a crossover series. Themyscira currently houses ranks upon ranks of Amazonians and the competitive atmosphere is stifling. There is a calmness before the storm that brews silently within the hearts of the characters. Even the readers are brought into the tension. The composedness of Nubia contrasts the disrespectful demeanor of Faruka and the brashness of Yara, bringing together a wide range of perspectives and history into the cultural landscape of the Amazonian island. The story’s progress is slow in the beginning, with the tie-in comic books elaborating on the suspense and mystery. Trial of the Amazons #1 ends on a serious turn of events, leaving everyone stunned and the reader eager for the next issue.
