DC’s Batman ’89 Gives the Burton Batmobile a New, Hi-Tech Ability
The Batmobile is capable of many different feats, ranging from shields to restructuring, but Batman ’89 upgrades the car with a new, useful ability.
The Batmobile gets a new upgrade in Batman ’89.
In a preview for the series that continues the story of Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne, the Caped Crusader and Robin are riding in the signature vehicle while being chased by the police. To avoid the officers’ pursuit, Batman activates a hologram ability, causing identical, digital versions of car to split off and confuse the police. Despite the upgrade, Batman tells Robin that he wouldn’t “believe the technical issues involved in generating a moving hologram.”
The Batmobile’s ability to create moving holographic images is not something that fans can witness while watching Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). In these films, the Batmobile is capable of various feats though, such as encasing itself in shielding and self-driving. Holograms are something viewers can find while watching actor Christopher Reeves’ Superman films, being that the Man of Steel speaks to a hologram of his late father, Jor-El. Alongside Batman ’89, this era of Superman films also received new life in Superman ’78.
Of course, there is an opportunity to further upgrade Keaton’s Batmobile in live-action though. Aside from his Bruce Wayne jumping to the comic book page, the actor will be reprising his role for The Flash and Batgirl movies set in the DC Extended Universe. At the end of the teaser trailer for The Flash, what appears to be the classic ’89 Batmobile is covered in the Batcave.
However, fans will have to wait a little longer for to see Keaton’s Batman again in theaters. Though The Flash was set to debut later in 2022, the film was hit with a seven-month delay for a new release date of June 23, 2023. For fans who just cannot wait to see Keaton don the cowl again, both Batman and Batman Returns are now streaming on HBO Max, while Batman ’89 #5 hits comic shop shelves and digital platforms on Tuesday.
