DC Teases The Sandman Spinoff Starring The Corinthian for April 2022

The deadly murderer known as the Corinthian treks across America in Nightmare Country, a new spinoff title in DC’s Sandman Universe.

A new entry in DC’s Sandman Universe imprint, entitled Nightmare Country, will release in April focusing on the deadly nightmare known as the Corinthian.

First teased on the DC Twitter account and fully unveiled by The Hollywood ReporterNightmare Country focuses on the Corinthian as he travels across America on the hunt for another nightmare, coming into contact with everyone from white supremacists to two deadly killers dubbed Mr. Agony and Mr. Ecstacy, who will serve as new players in the Sandman mythos. The series, written by James Tynion IV and penciled by Lisandro Estherren, also features guest artists every issue to draw dream sequences, with issue #1 featuring Yanick Paquette. Its title appears to be a play on Dream Country, the original Sandman series’ third major story arc.

Tynion, who made headlines last year for his decision to walk away from writing Batman in favor of publishing creator-owned work on Substack, is a diehard fan of Neil Gaiman’s original Sandman stories. Despite deciding to limit work on superhero comics in favor of his horror-tinged creations like Something Is Killing the Children and The Department of Truth, Tynion said that writing a Sandman spinoff series was a gig too good to resist.

“To be perfectly honest, I thought I had said everything I wanted to say with other people’s characters, but the moment that [DC editor] Chris Conroy asked me if I was interested in crafting a new story in The Sandman Universe, I knew I couldn’t say no,” Tynion said. “The Dreaming has lived in my head for half of my life. It’s a canvas on which so many stories are possible, and I am humbled to have the chance to make my own mark on it.”

The Corinthian first appeared in 1989’s Sandman #10, in the middle of “The Doll’s House” story arc. A suave murderer originally created by Morpheus as an experiment in controlled terror, the Corinthian is easily recognized for his striking sunglasses and teeth for eyes. Over the course of “The Doll’s House,” the Corinthian confronted his maker at a serial killer convention and was destroyed by the Lord of Dreams for squandering his potential and falling too deep into the wellspring of pointless violence. Other Corinthians were later created by Morpheus, but Nightmare Country is intended to be a spiritual successor to the events of “The Doll’s House.”

In the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Sandman, the Corinthian will be played by Boyd Holbrook. Riz Ahmed lent the character his voice in Act I of Audible’s audio drama of The Sandman, released in 2020.

Nightmare Country goes on sale April 12 from DC.
