DC Shows Its Evil Superman Is Stronger Than We Realized

War For Earth-3 #2 is the conclusion to a five-part crossover event, and reveals that Ultraman is a lot stronger than previously shown in comics.

DC Comics’ War For Earth-3 makes Ultraman, leader of the Crime Syndicate, into a much stronger foe.

Ultraman first appeared in 1964’s Justice League of America #29 as an alternate universe version of Superman. As a member of the Crime Syndicate, the twist of this Man of Steel is that he does not fight for others, but his own nefarious interests. Though he has the same powers as Superman, a preview for War For Earth-3 #2 shows that Ultraman is so strong that he can actually push a spirit out of someone’s body.

The preview shows Culebra — a member of the Suicide Squad who is currently a ghost — possessing Syndicate member Power Ring to fight against Amanda Waller’s forces. While Ultraman does not appear to be getting involved in the conflict himself, he does force Culebra’s spirit out of Power Ring with a single blow. Since it has never been revealed whether Ultraman possesses any mystical abilities for the likes of an exorcism, it seems this action was done solely with strength.

Unlike Superman, Ultraman fuels his powers by exposing himself to green kryptonite. This is a newer version of Ultraman though, being that Earth-3 rebooted once again following the conclusion to Dark Nights: Death Metal. This new Crime Syndicate and its villains were explored throughout the 2021 miniseries Crime Syndicate, with Ultraman’s backstory revealed in the title’s debut issue.

At the start of the War For Earth-3 event, Ultraman relinquished control of the planet over to Waller, simply because he did not feel like governing the world, a role she offered to take off his hands. Waller has been planning this since the start of the soon-ending Suicide Squad title, but her former right hand, Flag, is trying to stop her by any means necessary. He recruited his own Suicide Squad to take her on, but after being defeated by her assembled team of villains, he enlisted the help of the Titans to end the current conflict.

Exactly who will reign supreme over Earth-3 following this war remains to be seen. The preview and solicitation for the upcoming issue can be found below.
