The latest issue of Nightwing, by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo, sees DC murdering a Teen Titans member despite his invulnerability.

The latest issue of Nightwing, by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas and Wes Abbott, kills off a supposedly invulnerable former member of the Teen Titans: Cody Driscoll/Risk.
In Nightwing #90, Jonathan Kent/Superman sends Kelex to ask for Dick Grayson/Nightwing’s help. The book then cuts to Risk in Metropolis taking on a number of mysterious assailants. While Risk brags that he’s invulnerable, one of them drowns him in the river. Later, Superman and Nightwing receive news about Risk’s death. However, it’s far from an isolated incident, as heroes have also been killed in both Brazil and Spain. While it’s not clear just why these heroes died, the end of the issue sees Nightwing and Superman arriving at LexCorp in search of answers.
Created by Dan Jurgens and George Pérez, Risk first appeared in 1996’s Teen Titans #1 and was part of the iteration of the team led by Ray Palmer/Atom. An alien/human hybrid, Risk has a number of standard superhero powers — including enhanced strength and reflexes — as well as a limited invulnerability that keeps him safe from most physical harm. However, Risk is far from indestructible, as Superboy Prime was able to tear off his arm in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #4, by Geoff Johns, Phil Jimenez, George Pérez and Ivan Reis.
Nightwing #89 is the first of two issues in the “World’s Finest Sons” storyline. The next installment in the arc will take place in Superman: Son of Kal-El #9. Also by Taylor and Redondo, the solicitation for Son of Kal-El #9 doesn’t provide much of a hint as to just who is murdering those with superpowers, though it does re-affirm that the arc is fundamentally about Nightwing keeping his promise to look after Clark Kent’s son. Son of Kal-El #9 releases on March 8.
Following a stint with the Legion of Super-Heroes, an aged-up Jon returned to his timeline during the “House of Kent” storyline. He later took up the mantle of Superman when his father decided to head into space. Son of Kal-El has generated significant buzz as a series due in part to it revealing that Jon is bisexual.
Nightwing #89 is on sale now from DC. The next installment in the series, Nightwing #90, releases on March 15.
