DC Hints at New Birds of Prey Roster

A new Birds of Prey team featuring Lady Shiva, Miracle Molly, Katana and Ghost appear on a variant cover for Batman: Urban Legends #16.

The Birds of Prey are back with an all-new roster, and a variant cover for the upcoming Batman: Urban Legends #16 shows the team’s latest selection of crimefighters in all their glory.

Lady Shiva, Miracle Molly, Katana and Ghost make up the new team, as seen on Derrick Chew’s variant cover. The story within the issue, written by Che Grayson and penciled by Serg Acuna, is the third part of a tale that begins in Batman: Urban Legends #14. Little is known about this latest iteration of the Birds at the moment — aside from the fact that Lady Shiva and Katana are the leaders, and have their work cut out for them as they force this motley crew to learn the meaning of teamwork.

The Birds of Prey roster in Batman: Urban Legends is unique since previous rotations of the team have always included either Black Canary or Barbara Gordon. Originally debuting in 1995 in a one-shot written by Chuck Dixon, the Birds of Prey formed when Dinah Lance formed a partnership with Barbara, who was working full-time in her guise as the elite computer hacker Oracle at the time.

Huntress would later join the team as one of its most prominent members. Aside from this core trio, the Birds of Prey have also seen membership from the likes of Big Barda, Black Alice, Hawkgirl, Hawk & Dove,  Lady Blackhawk, Poison Ivy, Power Girl, Starling and Strix. Harley Quinn served as the face of the team on the big screen, as seen in the 2020 film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and Catwoman has also been associated with the Birds from time to time — including in one episode of the cartoon series Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Both Lady Shiva and Katana have served on Birds of Prey teams in the past, which may explain why the pair are leading this latest incarnation. Shiva joined the team in 2006’s Birds of Prey #92 under the moniker Jade Canary, while Katana was a member of the team’s 2011 New 52 roster, making her debut in issue #2. Miracle Molly, a cyberpunk-inspired technology expert created by former Batman writer James Tynion IV for his “Fear State” story arc, is a new face on the team, as is Ghost, a teenage thief created by Ortega for the story “The Ghost and the Knight,” which appeared in issue #15 of the 2021 incarnation of Legends of The Dark Knight.

Batman: Urban Legends #16 comes from Vita Ayala, Mark Russell, Che Grayson, Josh Trujillo, Nikola Čižmešija, Karl Mostert, Serg Acuña and Rosi Kämpe. Cover art is by Mostert and Trish Mulvihill, with variant covers by Ejikure and Chew. The issue goes on sale on June 14 from DC.
