DC Announces New Catwoman Creative Team

Tini Howard, Nico Leon and Jordie Bellaire take over on DC’s Catwoman with January’s issue #39, bringing Selina Kyle back to Gotham City.

DC Comics has announced the new Catwoman creative team that will kick off Selina Kyle’s 2022.

Writer Tini Howard, artist Nico Leon and colorist Jordie Bellaire will be taking over Selina’s monthly adventures beginning in Catwoman #39, with Jeff Dékal, Jenny Frison and Sozomaika providing covers for their debut. The issue’s official solicit reveals that Catwoman will be returning to Gotham City to steal from crime bosses and will be “looking fine while doing it.” This marks Howard’s DC debut. The writer is known for her recent work on Marvel’s Excalibur series.

Speaking on her Substack, Howard explained that her run on Catwoman will be a new jumping on point that takes place in the aftermath of Fear State, with Selina embarking on a solo journey to find herself. “I came in with a lot of plans,” she said. “I’m building to a Catwoman-centric tale the likes that Gotham has never seen. The shape of this story, what makes it required reading for Selina Kyle’s life all became so clear to me as a I worked on this.” Howard also thanked the writers who came before her, stating, “I’m standing on the shoulders of giants who told my favorite Catwoman tales like Brubaker, Cooke and Valentine, and I’m so grateful.”

Howard and Leon’s Catwoman series isn’t the only book starring DC’s premiere feline femme fatale. Writer Tom King and artist Clay Mann’s Batman/Catwoman title began last year and explores the relationship between the couple, while also examining the results of their relationship. Later this month, DC Black Label will also launch Catwoman: Lonely City by Cliff Chiang, which imagines a future where an aged Selina Kyle comes back to a Gotham City without Batman.

Outside of comics, Catwoman is set to have a big year in 2022. Actress Zoë Kravitz has undergone an intense physical transformation in order to portray Catwoman in Matt Reeves’s The Batman. Additionally, Selina will be stealing the spotlight for her first animated feature in Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming film Catwoman: Hunted.
