David Moyes has warned Chelsea and Manchester United they have missed out on the opportunity to sign Declan Rice on the cheap.

The West Ham midfielder is enjoying another reputation-enhancing season at the heart of a team which has serious designs on a top four place following a strong first half of the campaign.

Rice’s long-term future, however, remains the subject of intense speculation, particularly given his contract expires in the summer of 2024 and he has so far resisted at least two offers to extend that deal.

The Red Devils have earmarked strengthening their midfield as a priority in the summer and have Rice’s name on a lost of at least 15 players they would be interested in signing.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are also huge admirers of a player they let go as a teenager and made attempts to bring him back to Stamford Bridge during Frank Lampard’s tenure.

Rice has previously been valued at around £100million but Moyes believes it would take even more to sign a player who is still some way from realising his full potential.

Ahead of today’s FA Cup trip to non-league Kidderminster, Moyes said: ‘You will need humongous money to get close.

‘I said in the summer that I thought Declan Rice was £100m. That was your chance to get him cheap. You can make your mind up over what I’m talking about now.

‘I feel his commitment. He’s under contract and we’re really pleased to have him. He’s here for certainly a few years.

‘He’s like a special edition Declan Rice, there’s not many like him.

‘He’s arguably playing as well as any midfielder in European football, and the prices were expensive in January weren’t they?’
