Darkseid’s Son May Have Brought Peace to DC’s Most Violent Gods

Now that Orion rules Apokolips, he is poised to build true peace between the New Gods.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Justice League Incarnate #5, on sale now.

The cosmic structure of the DC Universe has been shaken now that Darkseid serves the Great Darkness, but aside from how horrible that is, a spark of hope has ignited within Justice League Incarnate #5 (by Joshua Williamson, Dennis Culver, Andrei Bressan, Jesus Merino, Hi-Fi, Tom Napolitano). While Darkseid may be lost to the enemy, Apokolips has gained a new ruler.

The line of succession still stands and with Kalibak incapable of taking the throne the title of ruler passed to Orion. At first, disturbed by this, he quickly realized that this was too good an opportunity to pass up. Accepting his father’s throne, Orion returned to Apokolips to try and do the impossible: create true peace between the New Gods.

The war between Apokolips and New Genesis is one of the oldest recorded wars in the DC Universe. The different factions of new gods have been at each other’s throats for as long as anyone can remember. There have been ceasefires, even temporary pacts made, but never before has there been a genuine attempt to unify the two forces. They are polar opposites, good and evil, day and night, tied together but ultimately distinctive.

In the face of a new enemy approaching though, Orion is wise to try and create an alliance between the two. What’s more, he stands the best chance of making it succeed. Orion was the son Darkseid traded to Highfather to maintain a truce between the two worlds and Orion came to believe in the ways of New Genesis. Yet he is still Darkseid’s son and that ferocity and strength are inherent to his character. It’s also something the people of Apokolips connect with. That will make it easier for them to swallow the idea of allying with their hated enemies, as well as give the gods of New Genesis assurance that this is a genuine opportunity for peace.

If successful, the union between the two factions would make them one of the greatest, if not the greatest forces in the universe. The new gods have always been powerful entities but united there would be few powers capable of challenging them. It will take all that and more to defeat the Great Darkness, especially now that it has Apokolips’ former ruler on its side.

More than that, this alliance could have lasting changes for the universe, most of them positive. A union between the two factions could result in them taking the best of each other and leaving the worst of themselves behind. Perhaps they would even form a more permanent alliance with Earth, removing the threat of attack from Apokolips once and for all.

It wouldn’t be too unlike what Marvel did with the Kree and Skrull, having the two warring factions unite into a greater empire that has become a friend to that Earth’s heroes. The same could happen here. Both sides know of the heroes of Earth and respect them for their strength and integrity. Orion himself has fought alongside them multiple times. If he manages to unite his people, then his next step might be to set up an alliance with the Justice League to ensure their mutual protection.
