Daredevil Does His Best Wilson Fisk Impersonation as the Kingpin of Prison

A Marvel preview sees the hero under the influence of the drug Re-Cid, taking control over his prison and channeling the demeanor of his greatest foe.

Matt Murdock channels his inner Kingpin in a Marvel Comics preview for Daredevil #34.

The previous issue of Daredevil left off with Matt having taken over the prison he was held in. While trying to investigate prison deaths, he discovered the prison was using a drug called Re-Cid on its inmates, an explosion then going off to release the drug throughout the entire building. With Daredevil and every inmate dosed with the chemical that heightens aggressive behavior, the preview picks up with the man without fear acting like Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, while talking with Detective Cole North.

This isn’t the first time that Daredevil has broken bad and danced along the line of hero and villain. 2010’s Shadowland storyline saw Matt as the leader of the Hand, an organization of assassins whom he used to control New York City and its criminal element. Of course, that storyline ended with Matt sacrificing himself to save everyone, though he would later return.

While our hero doesn’t follow that path in this preview, he instead has a dialogue with Cole about an issue that has been troubling him since Chip Zdarsky’s and Marco Checchetto’s tenure on Daredevil began. Daredevil #6 saw Matt Murdock try and leave the costume life behind and help ex-convicts as a parole officer, knowing full well that the system doesn’t always work as it should. The preview reveals how corrupt the prison system has become though.

According to Daredevil, the Re-Cid drug was being used on inmates when they were released from prison, spreading its aggressive effects to others in their neighborhoods. This in turn would lead to more violent outbursts from people and crime, meaning more prisoners for the prison system. Rather than rehabilitating people, something Daredevil has tried to do this series by believing that people can become better versions of themselves, those who run the prisons were working in direct contrast of the hero’s altruistic beliefs so they could line their pockets with more money.

This horrifying feedback loop shattered the last of Matt’s faith in the system being able to work, and with the addition of the Re-Cid drug, the reader can see the hero act more like his villainous foil in the series. The last page of the preview saw Matt saying, “I’m done with the rules, Cole. I’m done with the law.” The preview can be found below.
